He is installing Hi Lo's so he can just cut the old trumpet if he needs to. If he does not want to do that an ac re charge is not out of the question as the system only takes around one can of freon or so.

I think he wants to remove the upper bolts to allow access with spring compressor. I have worked on one where the dryer mounts directly over the RH bolt and has alloy pipes not hoses. If I recall it was a later car as well. Steve (CTR)

Guess I'll find out shortly  Back cones done - front to go.
You don't need to loosen the front sub frame to change out the front cones. You only need to loosen up the front sub frame when you replace the steering rack.
FWIW on injection JDM Mini's i have loosened up the bracket and move the drier over and managed to loosen the tower bolt.
Earlier JDM carbed Mini's usually have the drier in a different place.

Best to take the drier off. On JDM minis the drier is right above the subframe tower bolt. You can loosen the bracket connecting the dryer to the pedal box and try and move it out the way, but I would say there is a 50/50 chance if busting an alloy pipe in the process.

Cheerz....let us know how you got on with this.

I've done just what malsal has done on my Jap spec MINI with AC ( change rack ).  I don't recall having to remove anything other than the wiper motor cover to loosen the large bolt .

I did a steering rack on a JDM spec Mini and had to loosen the tower bolts and drop the rear of the sub frame to do this. I think i only loosened up the relay bracket for access but different year JDM Mini's have different a/c set ups so it is hard to say 100%.
On one occasion due to the cone thread not being lined up and pretty buggered up when i did finally get it loose (thanks to the previous owner) i was able to loosen up the front arm and not remove it completely but it would depend on how collapsed the cone was and if you want to save the trumpets. If you install Hi Lo's you can just cut the aluminium trumpet and pull the rubber donut out.

cones and trumpets can be changed from the wheel well by taking the top arm off. The only bolt that will need to be accessed from the engine bay is the 1/4 bolt on the other  side of the  threaded rod. I used a long extensions  about 20 inches with a universal at the end then  the socket. it fits just above the flywheel cover. I don't know if anything or everything is in the way for you. It will be tight.

It is pretty tight in there on the late cars. Have you tried loosening the mounts to sneak a socket into position? Since it is just suspension work, you can remove the upper arm to pull the hardware above it out, so you could do that part of the job without removing the tower bolt. That does not solve the problems of the rubber subframe mounts that should be changed out to hard items, but you could do the rest of the car and then do that tower when you need to service the AC.
