In some 30 odd years of driving a Mini as a "daily driver" meaning it was my work car and the 35 - 60 mile daily round trip to/from work gave it a great test for reliability - I can think of only one instance where I can blame the belt for for not getting me to work and having to have the car towed home.
Is there a source for the Pirelli Isoran 052 R 190 belt ( Kevlar C-AJJ3328/BELT ) made in Italy or a cross reference to other belts?  Gates, etc.

If I remember, Brendan helped me find the Gates belts for one of them... it may depend on whether it uses a tensioner pulley, which is how most of the early ones were. I found another very short video showing one with a tensioner. This used an obsolete belt according to MED at the time, but Brendon here at MM, found them anyway!

Thanks Jemal.  The MED belt drive is much more sophisticated than the Triger. I purchased a bugeye project that came kit form with a pile of parts and the  1275 with the belt drive. I wonder if the belts are interchangeable.

The 1310S engine in my car had a Triger belt kit when bought 20+ years ago.

After fitting 2 rebuilt engines since I am still using it in the 1360. I am on my 3rd belt, this is now the competition MM/Gates kevlar one. Before that, I did 40,000miles on an original Pirelli belt and the teeth still looked new. I changed it just in case..

I noted a `made in China' belt fitted loose, so I sent it back.
There are kits available from UK now with an idler pulley, the (now common) Chinese belt should be OK with these.

The belt should be OK it is 1 inch thick and has been used on the 16 valve KAD head for 15 years so they seem to have it sorted out.

I have to say I really like the somewhat minimalist design of KAD kit, hmmm ...., despite the potential total engine destruction.

Looks like an electric waterpump setup amongst other things.

I was advised against fitting one, by someone who really ought to know about these things but has to remain nameless.

Engines are guaranteed for the life of the belt.
Yes, you can break a chain, but its a hell of a lot more difficult.

We have had a Trigger belt kit on my various Minis since I won one at MMEW in Denver in 1984. Never had a problem and that kit is now in my Riley Elf.

That's good news.  I've been running belt drives for around 25 years and replace the belt every time I get the engine out (not that often).

Noting that the perceived wisdom seems to be that the belt should be changed every 10-20 thousand miles I've always been a little concerned.  Only a little though as I don't get to mine that often - and every one I've ever removed has always come out looking brand new.

Scuttlebutt has it that the newer belts are much like everything else - much reduced in quality/fit..  However, MM supply a Gates branded belt (that no one else seems to be to get hold of).  This is excellent - if somewhat expensive.

Cheers, Ian

I also removed a belt from an engine built in 1985.

Best part of the engine!

I've had a Triger belt drive since about 1985.  It has been on many engines.  It has been contaminated with oil without bothering anything for thousands upon thousands of miles. I do not personally know of anyone who had a belt failure.  I will continue to use it.

Hey, guys,

I'm interested in getting a beltdrive kit for engine rebuild, and would like to hear your opinion regarding beltdrive in general and/or any reommendation on specific brand. From my reading on the web, the major negative seems to be potential engine damage caused by snapped belt, if the belt isn't renewed regularly. The minor negative is the lack of justification for the cost on a regular road car.

So far I have found three kits offered by various outfitts. I wonder if anyone has experience with these.

1. This one is in our host's online store.

2. SH Engineering

3. KAD Engineering. This one is especially interesting, as it doesn't have a cover.
