Sorry for adding to a zombie thread. I have avoided this forum for 7 years, and I'm finding more zombie threads.... kind of like people had bailed in fear and newbies are resurrecting the threads. I'm glad to see less trolls, so far. Please tell me this is a troll free zone, before I go back into hiding.

Cheers,

I recall a 12G295 needs to be refaced a fair amount to retain compression on a standard 998. Otherwise there will be a drop in HP.

From what I understood, the 12g202 was on the 997, early 998 Coopers used the 12g206 then 295

I'd be interested in the answer to that question Spitz. I'm building a high end 997 resto, a NOS head would be what it's all about. I have a small bore Speedwell alloy 5 port head but I'm thinking correct over period mod. All it has to do is run and drive like a brand new 997 Cooper. Steve (CTR)

PS if someone thinks they need a Speedwell alloy 5 port small bore head I'm open to offers.

I know a 12a185 was an early S head...

.....but wasn't the 12a185 small bore casting for early 848 and 998 ( non Cooper )

OK! Our friend Mr. Wiebe Meyer just announced a whole choice of cylinder heads. I oubvioustly need your help.

-AEG163 rebuilt head, ported and polished, exhaust seats, new valves etc, ready to fit. $700
-12G940 head; perfect, hardened seats, all rebuilt. $700
-12G940 big valve, 1.401 intake, 1.215 exhaust, ported, skimmed, excellent. $400
-12G940 as removed from engine; big valve. $200
-3 of 12G295 heads for small bore engines. 2 are perfect and one is as came off engine. $450, $450 and & $250
-12A185 small valve head for 997 Cooper or 948 Sprite/Midgets. New. $400

First, as I understand, AEG163 heads are for sport engines...which is not my case since i'll try to keep the engine simple and mainly original. Don't care about power very much, as long as I can make long rides!
Lets forget the 12A185 head as well.

Then I have to understand what is small bore Vs. large bore. Is it a reference to 850 / 1275 cc engines, or is it  998cc stock bore / 998cc +60 bore. By the way my block will probably have +40 Bore. I will decide this in the following weeks.

Also, what does imply larger valves ? Different springs/ manifold / air intake / exaust / carb?

Sorry lot of information needed, I am using a lot off your generosity here ... I am restoring faster than I can research, read & learn by myself!

Someone in our club had a 1275 Mini metro engine complete in the front subframe including carbs, exhaust, rad, everything. He is making a vtech conversion. He just sold his entire front end to another person restoring and upgrading a Dutch Mini.

So now we need to ask what is happening to the 998cc that is coming out of that car.

Have no fear Al nothing will have to move down the 401.

But if it had to...there is always someone going to or coming from To.

I have just come through a six month rebuild and concur that just dropping in another lump would've been a better move.  However, now that I survived it and am back on the road it has proved worthwhile!  The cracked head, bad piston and new, used transmission are all forgotten. I will however, be looking for another lump if, heaven forbid, something happens again.  That way I can still drive the mini, while fixing the engine problem!  Thanks to all for help and information received from this forum and fellow owners who want to keep these cars on the road!

So, here we have someone in Montreal looking for a used cylinder head. I don't want to think how many we have scrapped over the years. Thanks for referring him to us. He did not know who we were when it was mentioned to find Deb and Keith; but he found us through our club's website.

I am waiting for him to call me and we'll find something for him.

Most of our members bought the Take off no lead heads in the 1990's when Mini Spares had the deals and we were sharing 40 foot containers.

It can be scarey if you don't know what rebuilding a motor entails and  if the machine shop has never seen a Mini motor before.

So , now we look forward to meeting Louis Philippe and adding to our club's membership.

Deb

Coopertune and the Minimover have good points! It never occured to me that the casting absorbs water... There are lots of good 998 engines around Quebec and Ont as well... something to consider.

Good luck...

Surprisingly, after we set fire into the cylinders for half an hour, we were able to scratch all the rust. Also, the machinist told me the head wasn't so bad after the stell ball bath (!?!). Because the engine was full of oil, and the transmission, crankshaft very good looking. I tought I would prefer a totaly reconstructed engine than a 'working fine' one. Thank you for the contacts!

Stopright there !!!!!!!!!!-

You are throwing good money after bad-

Your best bet is to buy a good used 998cc engine and tranny as a package and drop it in-

They are out there-

I just sod one this week, $650.00, great running engine with tranny-

Machine shop work is quite expensive, plus from the look of the picture as cooper tune states, who knows just how badly that engine is damaged-

Talk to Keith and Deb in Montreal, they must know where to locate a good used 998cc engine-

I could send you one but the cost of shipping would be prohibitive-

Also ask Martin Fontaine in Shefford Que (450) 991-2205 for help, he has lots of resources-
