Thanks folks for the advice! I recently had to replace my linkage system, and noticed that there was an extension welded to both the mount and the 'magic wand' connection point which allowed me to bypass the lift and shift to reverse action (which is odd, I'm sure there were a few other things happening as well). But after installing the new hardware, the gates moved to their correct placements, and lifting into reverse was a new feature.

Honestly, feels like I'm shifting a new proper MK1!

Again, appreciate the pointer(s)...

That was it!  The owner could not remember how he had done it for the past 8 years.  Drove it home last night and started making a list of Mini Needs.  Smile

Rod change requires Lifting to go past the 3/4 gate and over towards reverse.  The remote type gearboxes are similar in feel to a magic wand box, indeed they are nearly identical in that regard.

Now do I feel stupid. I couldn't figure out why my new engine with remote tranny would not go into reverse. I always pushed then to the left and back for my magic wand 850. When the car comes out of storage for the season I am going to see if this was the problem. I hopes that was the issue. Thanks for the knowledge.

Easy "mistake" to make. I bought my Mini in Toronto and drove it home 250+/- miles to Ottawa. I stopped for gas and when the car i'd pulled in behind didn't move, I could not get it into reverse. I serrupticiously opened the door, stuck one foot out and back-pedaled until I could drive away. After that, I parked where I would not need reverse until I gotr home.

When I pulled into the driveway, my wife (who'd never driven a Mini before) hopped in and backed it out of the driveway. My only question to her: "How'd you get it into reverse?"

.

"Hang on a minute lads....I've got a great idea."

Lift up, pull over and back to the right.

I just bought a Mark VI mini.  I went to pick it up from the previous owner and couldn't get it in to reverse.  He wasn't there, but his wife called him for advice.  He said reverse is all of the way right and back.  Correct?  I didn't try reverse on the test drive, which was my first mini experience and my first RHD.  It drove fine last night and went in to all four forward gears today.  It just won't slot in to reverse.  Help!
