We recommend the Quaife Torque Biasing Limited Slip Differential for the performance street car or the occasional track car. This Helical LSD uses gears instead of clutch plates for a seamless integration into your MINI.

AS ENGINE POWER outputs increase ever further, the ability to utilize this extra performance becomes more important. Wheelspin may look spectacular, but such losses of traction waste time either from a standing start or exiting a bend, whether driving on the road, circuit, rally stage or drag strip. Fortunately, QUAIFE’s patented Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) Helical LSD differential is an effective, well-proven, low-cost solution.

Fits the following Cooper S models with the Getrag 6-speed Manual Transmission:

2002-2006 R53 MINI Cooper S Hatchback
2005-2008 R52 MINI Cooper S Convertible

Althought the Quaife application sheet does not list the Gen 2 MINIs, we know it fits and works with the following:

2007-2013 R56 MINI Cooper S Hardtop
2008-2014 R55 MINI Cooper S Clubman
2009-2015 R57 MINI Cooper S Convertible
2012-2015 R58 MINI Cooper S Coupe
2012-2015 R59 MINI Cooper S Roadster

As a direct replacement for the standard, factory ‘open’ differential, QUAIFE’s ATB Helical LSD unit can transform the performance of your car. Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip unit, QUAIFE’s ATB Helical LSD unit relies on gears, rather than clutch plates for its operation.

That means it’s much smoother in operation, because unlike a conventional plate-style LSD, it never locks harshly with a set pre-load of wheel slip across the driven axle. Rather, it automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel across the axle, to a constantly varying degree and never locks.

To the driver (especially of a front-wheel drive car,) the results are significant performance improvements;- superior, controllable traction without the harsh steering wheel snatch or torque steer that have long been associated with performance differentials. These traction benefits can also be utilized in rear wheel drive vehicles, while QUAIFE ATB Helical LSD units offer significant traction advantages fitted to the front of four wheel drive cars

BENEFITS

[ ] Maximizes traction and minimizes wheelspin
[ ] Proven in drag and circuit racing, rallying and road use
[ ] Eliminates torque steer and snatching in fwd cars compared to conventional LSD
[ ] Maintenance free design and retains standard axle lubrication
[ ] Produced from CORUS steel billets throughout
[ ] CAD designed and CNC machined then inspected to ISO 9001 standards
[ ] Used by Ford, GM and Daimler-Chrysler as original equipment
[ ] Massive range available, from Alfa Romeo to Volvo
[ ] Beware of cheap imitations!

Reliability is total; the ATB Helical LSD units are designed using the latest CAD techniques and are CNC machined to ultra-tight tolerances from the very best CORUS steel billets. The completed units are then subject to rigorous in-house inspection on a tri-coordinate measuring machine before being dispatched to the customer.

Such quality means that unlike a conventional plate-style LSD the QUAIFE ATB Helical LSD unit requires no special maintenance or rebuilds, long lasting and it retains the standard method of lubrication, making for an easy, pain-free upgrade.

Proven in rallying, racing and on the road, the ATB Helical LSD differential offers safe, reliable, winning performance – everything you’d expect from a QUAIFE product.

We recommend new carrier bearings when you install the LSD. See NMK7101 for new carrier bearings.

As an alternative, we recommend the OS Giken clutch based Limited Slip Differential for Gen 1 MINIs or Gen 2 MINIs for those looking for maximum performance. The OS Giken unit offer a full 100% lock compared to the Quaife with a reported 30-70% lock. The other advantage of the Giken is when the inside front wheel should leave the ground in a tight turn whether from a stiff suspension or hitting a berm, the Quaife looses the limited slip function (acts like an open differential) where the clutch based Giken continues to work. For most people, this may not be an issue, but if you want the maximum performance - you decide.

Why do you need Limited Slip (LSD) when you have DSC in you MINI Cooper?? This is because the DSC is designed for 'safety' at the limits while the LSD is designed for improved performance. When the MINI Cooper DSC detects traction loss at a wheel, the system scrubs energy (applies the brakes) to restore traction at that wheel. In comparison, when a LSD detects traction loss, it transfers the energy from the wheel losing traction to the wheel with traction, to continue controlled motion of your MINI Cooper. The difference is the 'transfer' of energy instead of 'scrubbing' energy. For high performance driving, LSD is the answer.

What if you have the factory eDiff Limited Slip on your Gen 2 MINI? The factory optional Electronic Differential Lock Control (standard on JCW) is a result of the factory's cost cutting effort and works adequately for the street, but the Giken unit OUTPERFORMS the EDLC on the track. The EDLC uses independent braking to limit wheel spin in order to increase safety on the street with some inherent understeer on the track. Serious racers report the EDLC is NOT adequate for the track, not to mention the EDLC causes the brakes to overheat on some tracks, resulting in premature brake fade!
