I had one where the action of the pawl arm and the toothed gear where out of phase so that the arm basically overshot the tooth. Just had to turn the gear wheel a bit to get the arm to engage.

I'm not a speedometer repair person by trade, but like Terry, I've worked on quite a few speedometers from Triumphs, MGs, Minis... and even one from a Hillman. The pawl arm and the ratchet wheel can both wear as Rotbox said. However, you won't know until you get in there and look. Like anything else on a car, with proper documentation and by taking notes and pictures as you go, the maintenance and repair tasks don't have to be daunting... even for a speedometer. Doug L.

Although I would never profess to be an expert on the inner workings of a Smiths Speedo Head, I have taken a fair number of them apart........... and they even worked again after reassembly. At the risk of sounding repetitive (see the other thread on Speedo issues) I have found that the Pull Pawl Arm is the usual failed component, when trying to diagnose the stuckedness of an Odometer. That would be the white arm thingie in the pic. But hey, I'm no expert. Terry If you're not on the edge............ you're taking up to much space.

It is apparent that you "experts" have never had a Brit speedo apart. There is a fiber gear that turns the odo. that likely has broken a tooth. These are easily replaced. The gear is the same for all of them I think. Get your nerve up and take the back off and take a look inside and see what you find, it's not scary in there, I promise. Often times you can find an old speedo you can remove one from. I may even have one.

The number is turns/mile for a particular FD. I found out recently that there are 3 or 4 different ratios for the drive gears on the transmision as well, something I didn't know.

What exactly do the numbers meen? From the looks of it mine has the numbers SN4421/115S and 1408(both located around the gauge's center, so i'm guessing i have to get this one: http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/ADU2341/AddedFrom/CatBrowse-%20GAUGES/InvDetail.cfm, but if at all possible i'd much rather get this one:http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/13H4444MG/AddedFrom/CatBrowse-%20GAUGES/InvDetail.cfm.(i like the fact that it is in KM/h and i like the white face), so did i find the right numbers or am i looking in the wrong place? Oh and one more thing. I clocked my speed using a handheld gps and when my speedo said i was going 50mph my gps said i was going 55mph, does this indicate that the speedo i currently have might be the wrong one, or is there something that can be done to fix the speedo to show proper speeds? -D |
1408 is for 3.76 final drive ratio, says 90 but goes to 95mph Thank You in advance! Stieve Grumpy: I'm bettin' The Joker told you to kill me soon as we loaded the cash. BOZO;The Joker: No no no no, I kill the bus driver. Grumpy: Bus driver? What bus driver?

I think i might just try repairing it myself, Thanks for the tip on the pdf. -D

Google for the 27 page PDF by Anthony Rhodes entitled "Repairing Jaeger and Smiths Speedometers". Your odometer isn't broken, it's just tired. Kelley, look up Nisonger on the web. I think they are in NY. They rebuilt my 120+ speedo, and made it look like new. The clean, lube, calibrate, etc. Cost $110, a couple of years ago.

Hey Kelley, If she is so good at fixing things, how come she has pull it out every 10000 miles and fix it again? If you're not on the edge............ you're taking up to much space.
|
If i buy a new speedo (for 300$) are they fabricated better? In other words do they have the same problem (will i be buying a new one every so often). Or are they just as bad as the one i have now. -D

My girlfriend has to remove her speedometer and give the odometer a push every 10000 miles. After that it's fine until it hits 9999. Of course, she drives her car more than most of you guys and she knows how to fix things.
Cheers,
