I agree that a reasonably reliable and very streetable engine would be 75-80hp, I drove an honest 80-85HP A series engine, one now owned by a board member and it ran like stink off a pig, My rally must have been about 80 as well and ran as fast as I wanted to go in a mini. Peter No more cars left, Westpaminis is now just a memory, Good luck to all those hard working dealers left out there, We can tell you its not easy. We have fully enjoyed meeting all the fine folks we have in the business.

Why would it leak oil ? Mine don't.
I'm thinking I want to go a different route with the A-Series, similar to MadMatt with his lunatic 1600s. A 91mm stroke on a 998 bored out to 68mm with a 'charger and an 8valve BMW K head should give stump-pulling torque. Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

I own 2 minis- one with a Honda B18, and one with an Eaton Supercharged 1275. The Honda is blindingly fast, very nervous to drive with its LSD, doesn't leak oil, starts every time, and will last forever. The Honda has approx 150HP. The A series Mini is a new MINI supercharger (Eaton 45) on an Avonbar racing ported and polished 26cc head. Stock A+ cam, block, clutch, and gearbox. Put 110HP to the wheels on a rolling road. Sounds incredible, easier to drive fast than the Honda, but nowhere near as quick. I need to upgrade the verto clutch, as it was slipping on the rolling road, and I'm anticipating gearbox/ drop gear probs as I begin to drive it more in anger. Oh, and it leaks oil. For me, the ultimate A series would be a normally aspirated, short stroke (1071 crank) large bore(74mm) with a BMW K100 16v head fully ported with throttle body injection. To make best use of the BMW head's capability, the motor would need to spin to 9000 RPM. Imagine a fuel injected 16v a series with 140HP... Oh, and it would cost you. And it would still leak oil.

I think the ultimate A-series isn't hard to achieve. The ultimate motor will put 70-75Hp to the ground and happily run 100,000 miles (20+ years for most people) and do so with just your basic maintenance. You get a Mini with one of these motors and it's just fun. Doug

Yeah, its the MiniWilliams guy. I'm thinking 25+ psi of boost would not be a ling lived engine. But, since there are heads that flow better, what do you think could be accomplished with other combinations?

Same guy Pete, we just chatted to him a few years ago now and his power has just kept increasing ever since !
I have still to meet the person who is 100% happy with a Honda/Vauxhall transplant. They're just wrong for so many different reasons. Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

You should really clarify, ultimate for street? strip? longeviity? top speed? sustained speed?
The rebuilds would be so frequent on such a motor as you described that it would take an awful lot of money and patience to run such a beast. I chatted with a gent with a 250HP plus A series (might even be this guy but he was known at miniwilliams) and he told me of his yearly rebuilds. Nothing was left when he was done, basically everything was replaced each year.
I hate to say it, but I honestly believe the best A series is a properly set up honda motor with the right diff for use with tens, I would do it in a second to my estate if I could afford to do it.

I'm sure a few of you have seen the recent magazine article about Matt Woods 310 bhp turbo A+. Still a 5 port. I started wondering, how would you build the ultimate A-series? No budget, no sanctioning bodies. Would you go with a Turbo'd 16VKAD head? A supercharged 8 port? A turbo BMW bike head? What have you built? Or dream of building?
