I do as Cheleker; some oil,4th gear, push backwards, but then forwards to get air out of pickup pipe.

We have this "scary" ordeal on the race B I work on every time we work on it almost. Even the last time it took a long time for the pressure to come up even though all we did was drain the oil and let the motor sit on a bench for a week as we sorted out a tranny problem.

Disconnect coil wire, take out plugs and crank. On a B it can take some time. And I think every time we forget how long it takes. Don't burn out starter.

Priming works sometimes. Sometimes not. This last time we finally just had to put plugs back in, hook coil up and start it. It was a "last resort". Oil pressure came up instantly.

Opinions I express here do not reflect my wife's.

My 1360 sat for 6 months, I cranked it for 20 secs with plugs out, but got no pressure (Minispares Sureflo pump). So I primed it like Chuck said, no problem.

It all depends on the oil pump type and its age, some are better than others at dry priming.

Are you going to pull the oil pump? (not a bad idea) check for wear and change the gasket. Other than a new build there should be sufficient oil in the galleries for safe pressure for start up, but I would take the others advise as well. If you are going to remove the pump ,pack it with vaseline before you re-install it, works great.

Cheers

An addition to the instruction of getting oil into the block and pump from the pipe connection is to put the car in 4th gear and push it backwards. That will suck oil into the pump. Then add some more oil.

its is always a good idea to prime the oil , you can remove the   left hand top block oil cooler line  from the cooler and hold the  hose up and fill with oil  if no oil cooler   remove the  bolt  bolt from the oil line coming from the oil filter and pore oil in to the block ,   it will prime the pump ,   next you can pore some oil in the rocker area  ,  I then dissconect the  distributor middle lead and crank it over till i see oil pressure .  I do this on new or old engines ,

remember to  check the oil level in the trani .

I just popped a different engine into my 72 Mini. It is a 998 that has been siting for quite a while. Do I need to prime the oil pump before starting, and if I do, how is that done?
