Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

Race Report -USTCC

My Mini has a new setup for this race. Speed parts from my sponsor Mini Mania have been added by my sponsor Bay Bridge Motors and USTCC sponsor Nitto has provided four brand new NT 01 tires. This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times.

MINI Clubman Review

Published: 21st April 2008
The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

I have found that the template is needed as long as you line up the body seem strips and line up the bumpers with the notches in the arches. My wheels are 12x6 deep dish wheels from GBparts and they look like 13s and fill up the arches perfect and dont need extra spacing in the rear at all.I will agree the 10in wheels do ride better then the rest.

2x4 method...Hey Quick, still got that photo of your middle ages era engine hoist?

Having (finally) driven Minis with 10, 12, and 13 inch wheels I can say that I much prefer the 10s.  The 12s are a little bouncier, and the 13s on a sportspack Mini I drove / rode in were downright choppy.  It might be the sidewall on the typical 165/70 10" wheel / tire combo helping out, 'cause on the 13s they're usually just tiny beasties separating your wheels from Mr. Road.  They do look the part though.  I guess it all comes down to how much you want to sacrifice ride quality for looks.  My $.02 anyway.

Thank you Herman!

Man, I cant wait to get the car on the road... Pulled the engine last night - thanks to the advice from another thread.  Didnt have a hoist so me and my neighbor rigged up some straps and a 2x4 to pull it out.  Going to pick up a trailer tonight to bring the car to the body man's garage.  Then off for paint - decided on Morello Purple, ya I know it wasnt one of my choices originally but someone made a suggestion and I really liked the color, so I am running with it.

Hopefully mid-June I get all this done and then have the car back so I can put in the 1293 - it looks lonely on the floor.

I've seen some 12" wheels w/sportspack arches and imho look good if you can space them out far enough.

Thanks for the good info Peter.  I do have a set of Hi-Lo's that came with the car and were not installed - currently reside on my shelf in the garage.  I want to change out the rubber cones for springs at some point and figured I would install the hi-lo's at that time.

This template you mentioned, was that something that I can order or is there one floating around this board?

If I remember correctly 13x6 look just about perfect, you will need the sport pack rear wheel spacers, I think they are 38mm. They put the rear wheels out just enough.

13x7s from memory are just a tad too wide but you can try them out.

You will need a sportpack arch template to drill the holes and cut the front arch. More than likely you will also need hi los on an older car to get it to sit right and not have the wheels rub. I have swapped out factory 12 inch alloys for after market alloys of the same size and still needed hi los. The cars were made to make it out of the factory door, if it fit, it went, no matter if the subbys were in crooked or something was out of whack. We just sold our last car which was a true early 70s car in full sport pack trim, it might still be visible on www.westpaminis.com to see what I am talking about.

cheers. Peter

No more cars left, Westpaminis is now just a memory, Good luck to all those hard working dealers left out there, We can tell you its not easy. We have fully enjoyed meeting all the fine folks we have in the business.

eventually I will be looking at some 13x7 wheels, for now I have some 12x5's.  I have a fiberglass front end already so not sure how much of a change I will need to make with it.

Thanks for all the info on this guys.

I don't believe there will be any problems fitting them, this is done all the time to older Minis. But if you want to use them for their originally intended purpose (to house big 13" wheels) you will need to cut metal from the front wing metal for clearance. The Sportspack arches hide the cutouts.

You can even get a more substantial trim piece for that area (at least you could a few years ago) looks pretty darn good. Peter
