I had the stock bracket on, but when I needed a new battery, I bought an Optima Red Top. It's almost a perfect fit for the battery box, but I couldn't put the bracket back on (wants to go over the terminals). It's just sitting in there now. willy

pologround, is there a clamp on your battery?
from your photo it seems like the clamp hole is empty.

I have the stock bracket that came with the car. It was not installed when I got the car though. I was mostly curious how the eye bolts actually attached. I will figure something out. I was just trying to stay original. Guess it doesn't really matter though. Thanks for the info, Jeff

Mine has a piece of (not exactly) angle iron with 1/2 or 3/4" legs with the aformentioned bolt holes drilled in. The angle piece is on the left upper corner of the battery. The bolts are either eye bolts or have a hook on the end - not sure, I'll have a look later - and angle toward the right lower corner of the battery box so the clamping action is down and to the right. It appears my battery is smaller than the one originally mounted but it doesn't matter with this clamp arrangement. The cover is a "fiberboard" box that fits over the top of the battery and is held down by a flat rubber strap. Long explanation...in the spirit of a picture tells a thousand words...look here for the drawing in the parts manual.

I use square steel tube inside thick water hose and drilled for two "eye bolts" which hook into stock loops. Clamps whatever size battery is underneath.

the problem with replying to this question is that it depends on the size and shape of your battery. A clamp that works great may not work anymore when you get the next battery, if it is different.
Sometimes, a short rubber strap (like a bungee cord, but solid, black rubber) works best. Sometimes you can use the existing angle-iron bracket that came with your car, but with longer or shorter "hooks" (these can be bought at local hardware stores). When really stuck, a piece of angle-iron (steel or aluminum) with a hole drilled in each end is needed.
The two things that you want your clamp to do: - never, ever touch the two terminals (the mini arrangement is kind of risky for this, the severe angle that the clamp is pulled down at, it can be all too easy for it to slip and that would be BAD). - hold the battery tightly enough to not shift, but not TOO tightly that the pressure could split the battery case (also BAD).
I tried buying all the factory hooks and brackets for my mini, and for my MG, and they never really worked out best for me. Over the years, depending on the battery, I've used all of the above.
hope this helps,
Norm

All I have is battery fuzz and a loose bracket, nothing to show. I didn't even know there was a strap until you mentioned it.

Can someone shoot me a pic of their battery bar and bolts and battery strap attachment? I am not sure how it all goes together! I have some of the parts and the ones I am missing on order.
