I basically agree with what's been said in the other "Entitled" post. But Cindy and I experienced some different attitudes last Friday when we took Wallace out to go to the weekly Friday night hot rod gathering across San Antonio.
Most of the trip has to be made on a four-lane divided highway which outter-rings San Antonio. We left about 700PM, traffic was heavy and it was nearly 90 degrees. Now Wallace isn't real happy about hot weather. So, at one point when traffic was stop-and-go, he stalled...and the starrt was kicking over real slow (not enough to start up again). Cindy hopped oput to push us to the median. FIRST INSTANCE OF KINDNESS
Suddenly the man (probably early 40's)directly behind us jumps out of his vehicle and helps her...took only 20 seconds or so. I was surprised because I would have thought that a person would lean on the horn and shout at us to get the hell off the highway.
We got started again after a few minutes and proceded on. After about another 6 or 7 miles, the oil light (I have a big red one on the driveer's dash) flickered and went on. IMMEDIATELY shut the engine off and coasted to the side and rolled, trying to get to the top of a hill. Didn't make it. Got out and looked into the engine bay. Seeing nothing amiss I checked the oil - half a quart low. The temp gauge was running at just about 90 degrees C. before the oil warning light went on (no, I didn't look at the pressure gauge...I'd NEVER had the oil light come on before so I was riveted to that!) Got back in after a few minutes and tried to start him up again - of course, starter didn't want to cooperate. There was an exit at the bottom of the hill and a quickee-mart...I thought we could get over the hill and coast down and get a quart of oil. Cindy starts pushing again but it's harder as it's all uphill. Then here comes the SECOND instance of kindness.
A young guy - mid 20's - stops and helps Cindy push! Said his brother has a new MINI and he loves the vintage ones. We get to the top of the hill, try a couple of roll starts to no success.
THIRD KINDNESS
I notice a guy backing up in some kind of service truck. We ponder the problem and I ask him if he has jumpers. Yes he does. Just a touch and Wallace starts right up - the oil light is NOT on and we have about 30 pounds of pressure (it is HOT abiently and water/oil-wise!)
THREE TIMES strangers stopped to help us during this one trip. Were we grateful? Absolutely! So even to a confirmed cynic like me and one who has very little faith in the "younger generation", I had something to think about.
Wallace? Put a half a quart of oil in him, got to the hot rod gathering okay. Drove all the way home that night with no problems. Still not sure what caused the burble in the oil pressure (but that isn't the reason for this post).
