Well, based on your picture your current starter is an early type non-engaged, so you can't go wrong with replacing it with one of the same type.

Under Articles/Technical Information/Genera there is an article on Mini identification which includes engine information.

You know what? I don't mean to sound dumb but I think I am more confused now on what I should buy than before? What am I missing or not understanding here? Am I preengaged or not am I an A+? oh no, help!!

I think this was my nemesis.

A verto (orale holmes), A+ motor from a Metro with an older engaged starter. How very fun indeed.

What happened to me was that I bought a used A+ engine that didn't have a starter. I drove back to the outfitter and got a starter based on the engine being A+. When I got home it wouldn't fit. I went back and confirned that teh engine is A+ but the ring gear (with pic) is from an A series. The clutch was even Verto.

Not sure if my explanantion is making sense but since then I look at the ring gear to tell me what starter I need.

Terry. Nice photo. That starter behind a Mk I grille? And not spaced out? If so, then I stand corrected. The only time I ran into that set up, there wasn't enough clearance. Maybe the front end had been bashed and rebuild poorly on that car.

Looks like you had to do some wire rerouting, but it does fit. One more coat of paint on the starter solenoid and it wouldn't have!

It's all relative.

The flywheel gear may have been changed also.

Just don't try a Metro starter on a Mk I with a proper Mk I grille!

Looks like you have a later A+ block but with an A pre-verto clutch and an early type non-engaged starter (kind of a bitsa motor).  A later pre-engaged starter will not work on your car without significant modification (pulling the engine and flipping around the ring gear on the flywheel).  Fortunately, the early starters are cheaper than the pre-engaged type.

It may be simply that the bendix is starting to stick on the starter shaft as is spins down to engage the flywheel- you might pull the starter and clean the shaft of any grease or oil and relube with dry graphite only.  Could also be the brushes in the motor going out - the early starters are eminently rebuildable, but might was well buy a rebuilt one.

Metro pre-engaged Starter will fit, the solenoid will just clear the Grill. The mini version has the Solenoid sitting at the 12 0'clock position, while the Metro version is more like at the 11 O'clock position.

That having been said, I have an 89 Metro in my 1965 with a Slat Grill and it fits......... just.

Clunking in the front end may be a Knuckle Joint or Ball Joint or Wheel Bearing that needs replacing, or your CV nut has come loose. Hard to say, would need to do the wiggle test to confirm this.

Keep us posted, Terry

I'm not sure about the starter exactly, but I think I have a memory about the "clocking" of starter from Metro to Mini. ( ? Maybe the solenoid? )  I'm assuming you are attempting a Metro because you have later A+ Mini parts. Double check where the stuff like the solenoid, connections, etc are located by looking at the end and thinking about hands on a clock face.

Best of luck on that clunk.  Don't rule out wheel bearings and suspension and subframe rubber mounts ( once again, if later Mini )

Best regards,

MSH

as a Mini? I have a feeling mine is going out as it does not want to "engage" sometimes, ironically when the engine is warm. So I want to be prepared and go ahead and get one but I have no idea which one to get?

Also having some loud clunking noice from the right front (if you are sitting in the car) tire area, almost sounds like a shock bottoming out, only occurs on bumps (large and small), checked all the suspension stuff and it is all tight, any idea what else I should check? anyway to check to see if the shock is bad?

Thanks so much!
