Schools are high tech these days and often have online messageboards and forums. Find USC's board and you will likely find a subforum dedicated to housing and students seeking roomates. Oh yea, all the places dved mentioned and I would add, the San Gabriel Valley, Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Whitter, Montebello etc. You have the choices of the 10, and the 60 Fwys from that area, and w/o traffic, its about a 15 min drive to SC. I live in Monterey Park and commute to downtown every day and that takes me about 30 mins, and SC is about another 10 mins or so from downtown.

I have to agree with Taiki
Plus, the USC campus is pretty much a bubble in a less than ideal neighborhood as are most urban campuses. The neighborhood, I assume, has changed considerably since the 1970's. BTW, neighborhoods like that do certainly get better over time because they become the only affordable places to live and buy and can eventually come back around. I wouldn’t let someone’s opinion based on hearsay from 3 decades old experience color your opinion of the place or your decision.
I know a couple people who work at USC and there's a guy in the office who just graduated, so I'll ask around.
There's a Radisson on campus but I think it may used as dorms. Again, I'll find out and report back.
As for places to live, she's gonna be driving so she may as well find a neighborhood she likes and not worry too much about proximity. I’d advise against commuting from the West Side (Santa Monica area) as the 10 regularly becomes a parking lot with no carpool lanes. She can look at Silverlake, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, parts of Highland Park/Garvanza and even South Pasadena. From North East LA it’s not that difficult getting to USC via the 110 and she can even take the Metro Goldline. I have friends who go to Sci-Arc (Downtown-ish) and live in Manhattan Beach, there’s virtually no way around commuting.

I think that anyone who involves their parents in their choice of a university to do post graduate studies should not be involved with that sort of enterprise and should instead consider a career as a Wal-Mart greeter.

The SC neighborhood isn't all THAT bad! Sure it's a little dirty, and I wouldn't wander around there at night, but LA is getting somewhat better. I have a friend who works at USC, she might be able to give you some ideas about housing. Email me and I'll give you her info. Taiki

The Hell with her car. I'm more concerned with your daughter's safety. I don't know if it's still true, but I once(1970s) used to carpool with a neighbor who was a USC alumnus and he warned me about visiting, much less attending, USC because it was in a very bad neighborhood. Such neighborhoods seldom get better with time. Anymore, though, that assessment applies to much of LA and its surrounds. Didn't you and the Missus ever conduct a college hunting trip with your daughter? You certainly should have.

There are tons of out-of-state cars in Los Angeles. She will barely attract any attention. I do not see a problem there... I work almost within sight of USC (in downtown LA) and I work with quite a few USC Alumni... I may have a few housing leads for your daughter through them.  lease let me know if I can help. I'd be happy to provide my number for any emergencies if you do not have any local contacts. I am literally almost in the neighborhood... And USC is not in the best of them, unfortunately. But it is alright. - Does she like to sail? I am in need of a couple of crewmembers at the moment... e-mail sent...

1. License - no, as long as she intends to remain a resident of somewhere else. (permanent residence is the test) 2. Vehicle - Maybe. If she intends to take up residence, or is a resident of CA, then she has 20 days to register it once it enters CA and it is subject to all smog rules (i.e. must have all equipment and pass the visual and emmissions smog check). It gets kinda gray with students - they are here for extended periods but may want to leave as soon as school is over. If she maintains an out of state DL then its fairly easy to argue that the car does not need to be registered here in CA. If she gets a California DL and does not also register the car, she will get ticketed for running it with out of state registration. Steve Life is driving Minis. Everything else is just waiting.

tHERE IS A NICE hotel across the street from the university, it probably not be cheap, but it is safe. It's an irony that one of the most expensive universities is located in the poorest area of LA. Most states have a student exemption in regards to vehicle registration/inspection. (In most states) The vehicle can remain on home state plates while the student/driver is enrolled in school. After the person is no longer a student, then they are considered a resident and must register/inspect and insure the vehicle in the state unless they leave. Most states will also honor out-of-state licences. I would call a CA BMV/DMV office and ask to speak with a supervisor who knows these rules for sure. ***Rover Mini Spi A/C Compressor for sale! Our eldest has been accepted to grad school at USC, in LA. We live on the East Coast, and we've know nothing about what she's getting into. I have a few questions for the locals please: 1. If she takes our old Maxima with Maryland tags with her, will she have to register it in California, and get a California driver's license? (She didn't have to, as an undergrad in Boston) 2. Will the Maxima have to pass California smog tests eventually, in either case? 3. Anyone know of safe, affordable (a relative term I realize) housing in the area, or a place to stay for a few weeks while she finds a place? The University appears to be near the intersection of I-10 and I-110. THANKS! Don't be too impressed. My avatar picture was taken on a 'good' day, and improved with Photoshop.
