"I have an 87 Mini with Austin tag in the engine compartment, titled as a 73 Leyland" Which means that someone ordered a stock "Austin" VIN plate and stamped the numbers needed to match the 73 title. I have a friend in England that has made VIN plates out of old pie pans. All a VIN plate is, is a piece of flat metal that someone stamped numbers into. If it is not the factory tag, there is no telling what it might say on it. Heck, I know a very famous Mini in the US that is running around on a Woeseley Hornet VIN tag.

Bill, now the family tree needs to reflect the sale of Jaguar to Tata Corp in India, a former British colony... And from the looks of that tree, no wonder the British automobile manufacturers have been in disarray. Not that our Big Three is any solution either! Fascinating chart. tx,

I have an 87 Mini with Austin tag in the engine compartment, titled as a 73 Leyland Mini, with an engine # no one recognizes. i read somewhere that it was Morris and Austin 7 at the beginning , and then British leyland for a while, then back to Austin, then Rover???

Car badges and the name of the parent company often had little relationship to each other when it comes to Minis!

But where you were makes a difference. My 1973 Leyland Mini 1000 was sold and titled as a Morris in NZ despite not being maked as one except on the VIN plate... Bill

So IS there a timeline somewhere for those of us who don't have the 1987?
I've got a '79, purchased from a Rover dealer in Canada in 1979, but I've been told it's not a Rover.

I think your car would have had Austin Rover printed on the original VIN plate.

I know the cars were called different things at different times. Anyone know the nomaclature timeline? Mine is an 87 or 88, is it an Austin, or a Rover mini?
