Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

Race Report -USTCC

Infineon Raceway, April 11, 2008.
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
My Mini has a new setup for this race. Speed parts from my sponsor Mini Mania have been added by my sponsor Bay Bridge Motors and USTCC sponsor Nitto has provided four brand new NT 01 tires. This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times.

MINI Clubman Review

Published: 21st April 2008
The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

MaryP, here are some things to consider:

Roof Rack:
High load rating
Solid fitment
but:
Must lift high
Wind resistance will affect mpg
Expensive

Rear Rack:
Less expensive
Easy to  mount bike
Removable
Less mpg affect
but:
May scratch surface if not clean
Can't use rear wiper
Can't open rear hatch with rack in place

To alleviate the 'scratching' problem, you might attach semi-permanently, some 3M clear vinyl at the mounting points.

You might find aftermarket roof racks that cost less, but they will have less load rating and they attach to the plastic rain gutters which is not as durable.

The Hitch Mount rear rack is a good alternative - see NMX1500 for the hitch. You can use almost any 1-1/4" hitch mount bike rack with this setup.

Good luck!
Ken

A BINI roof is almost as low as a Mini's so height isn't a problem. I do hate that you have to attach brackets to the roof for the BINI racks to work. I don't know if Yakima or Thule make one's that you don't have to permanently attach brackets or not.   I just don't like them so I never put them on my BINI.    dan

I used to sell roof racks and rear racks years ago. My experience is that the rear racks will scratch your car no matter how careful you are.

Roof racks are best, and 2nd best are the hitch mount.

Inner and outer sills, left and right door steps, left-right-front-rear floors, and inner wings welded in place.  Moving to the boot area, then to the a-panels/front end.  Should have the welding done in 3 more years! :)

Battery Box removed, and rear valence removed.  Time to clean up the rust, and find the holes.

Mary,

My friend has the roof rack and while it works well for him as he is tall, I would have a hard time getting my bike up there. I am too short and too heavy. The rack option that you are talking about it a little more pricey but I think it is a better set up. Now you can get a regular hitch installed on your car (they can hide them pretty well so it won't stick out and look horrible) and order a universal bike rack for it which would be a lot cheaper than installing the Minilink or whatever that system is.

I'm looking at bike rack options for my Mini Cooper 2007. Does anybody have any experience with the rear rack system? It's much more inexpensive than the regular roof racks...

 Thanks!

Mary
