What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

Race Report -USTCC

Infineon Raceway, April 11, 2008.

My Mini has a new setup for this race. Speed parts from my sponsor Mini Mania have been added by my sponsor Bay Bridge Motors and USTCC sponsor Nitto has provided four brand new NT 01 tires. This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times.

MINI Clubman Review

The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

check with Jim Fletcher at  PPD in Gilberts(near Elgin).  He has a lot of Mini experience building road and race engines and gearboxes and  could do a Morris box in his sleep.  Jim is at (847)  836-9852.  Sharp guy, easy to deal with.  His shop is pretty impressive also.  Please email me if you have any questions.

Don't know of anyone in your area, but I would contact Paul Asgeirsson of Morriservice (Portland Oregon). pasgeirsson@worldnet.att.net. He was one of the people that orginally developed the 4 speed and 5 speed Datsun transmission swaps.  He also sells the kits to complete the same with very detailed installation instructions, and lots of other upgrades for the Morris Minor that he developed (clutch operating mechanism, Spridget front disc brake upgrade, etc.).

He can also rebuild your ribcase or smoothcase tranny, but parts are getting hard to come by, especially for the smoothcase.  If you're going to that expense of a rebuild ( I would only do it if I had the parts already or for a concours restoration) you might as well do the upgrade, but Datsun 210 trannys are getting thin on the ground now as cars have been crushed and people are actively scouring the countryside for the remaining ones to use for Spridget and Minor five speed upgrades - your best bet may be to find a four speed Datsun transmission.  There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that Datsun 210's are being "body snatched" in the middle of the night for their transmissions...Laughing

If Paul doesn't know it about Minors its not worth knowing.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic or shop in the Chicago area to repair a 1958 Morris transmission?  I have detailed Morris technical manual and Morris Motors in the U.K. has the parts.  I would prefer to drive the vehicle to the shop for the work, but if necessary could pull the transmission to ship it out of state.

Alternatively, I have read about some folks around the world (U.K. and Australia) substituting a Datsun 210 transmission.  Has anyone had experience with this or know of someone who has done this who could provide details?
