Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

My Mini has a new setup for this race. Speed parts from my sponsor Mini Mania have been added by my sponsor Bay Bridge Motors and USTCC sponsor Nitto has provided four brand new NT 01 tires. This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times.

MINI Clubman Review

Published: 21st April 2008
The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

Hi,  There is no problem  shifting into gear with the clutch in. I would tend to suspect that I have excessive end play in the crank.  Are there any measurements that I could do whith the engine in the car?

Check the thickness of your carpet up under the pedal.

My floor mat gets up in the way sometimes and keeps the clutch from working as it should.

When you push on the clutch there is a tremendous force pushing on the end of the crank, The thrust bearings counteract this force. This is a sure sign of the thrust bearings starting to wear out or that they have 'spun'. What happens is the crank actually moves and there is not enough play in the wrist pins and the pistons cause undo drag in the cylinders.

You need to adjust the clutch.  It sounds like the pressure plate is not moving far enough to fully disengage from the flywheel when you press the clutch pedal.  You didn't mention wheter or not it is difficult to get into gear, or whether you hear grinding when shifting into 1st or 2nd.  You are probably slowing the transmission down enough to shift, but not enough to remove the load from the flywheel.

I would start at the clevis pin where the pedal attaches to the clutch master cylinder and check for slop.  Follow the linkage from there through the slave cylinder to the throwout arm and make sure there is little to no free play in the mechanical linkage.  Next, adjust the stop bolt and lock nut for the throwout arm per the manual, and finally, adjust the large nuts on the clutch cover.

Chances are it is a combination of the clutch being slightly out of adjustment and slop in the linkage, which happens over time.

My clutch seems normal in every way except for one mysterious problem. When I depress the pedal to stop at a stop sign, the engine drags down a bit. If I put her in neutral and let the clutch pedal out I get about 200 rpm's more at idle. I can also experirnce the same dragging effect while starting. The engine cranks faster when the engine is in neutral with the clutch pedal out. As soon as I depress the pedal, regardless of which gear, the starter drags.  Any suggestions?
