Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

MINI Clubman Review

Published: 21st April 2008
The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

Nice install, Steve!

It was good to see you and Willy yesterday (and his buddy, though I don't recall his name right now!), even with all of the ribbing.  Next time, maybe you can bring up those caliper shields...

Although Jon may never know how well it works, seeing as how his car is in pieces in his garage...(obligatory taunt to get Jon motivated to get his car back together )

I used Dynamat Xtreme on the engine side of the firewall, inside of the dash and the top of the parcel shelf. I used FatMat Rattletrap on the underside of the bonnet, the inside of the firewall, the inside of the back seat panel, the insides of the rear quarters, the boot floor and inside of the boot lid. Still not finished yet. Has made a big difference, well worth the time and money so far.

I like the Dynamat better than the FatMat, but the Dynamat is very spendy so I only bought enough to do what I considered to be the most critical areas.

I put RattleTrap (I think it's a FatMat product) on the firewall, engine side.  It made a WORLD of difference.  I went from a noisy interior where I heard the sucking of the SU to a quiet, almost modern interior.  Great stuff, if you can use it to that degree!

My current car uses LizardSkin.  FANTASTIC stuff!  You not only get the sound insulation, but you get thermal insulation, and corrosion resistance, too.  It's not cheap, but it's easy to use, and, with the benefits it outweighs, anything on the market (IMHO).  No pun intended, since this stuff weighs next to nothing...

 My experiences are here:  http://www.drjing.com/Mini/BLOG/LizardSkinned.htm

I installed dynamat extreme in our mini last year. It made the car feel more solid, cut down most of the rattles, and lowered road noise. Engine noise seems to still be quite loud even though the entire firewall (entire interior of cabin) was covered with the material; maybe in combination with other soundproofing, dynamat would cut engine noise.

If you are serious about sound Blackhole is the best .  You pay for what you get.  They have a product to put in speaker boxes that will allow for a 30% smaller box with same results would be great for under rear seat installs.  Dynamat is good but Blackhole is better.  Anyone use the stuff that comes in liquid form?   The best sound product I have ever purchased was a dyflex panel Dynamat sells one called Dynaorb.  Without going into detail it increses midbass to crazy levels , My current setup I dont even run a sub just a pair of 6 1/2" comps.  They are ceap and just go behind the speaker best car audio money I have ever spent.  heres link http://www.dynamat.com/products_car_audio_dynaxorb.html

I would advise all to pick a pair of these up never heard anyone  disapointed!

Another product I've heard good things about is HushMat. I haven't used it myself though. You can search for it on Amazon.com - I think they have some DynaMat  also. In the near future, I'm planing on a full resto on my mini and I am going to have the bottom of the car rhino lined in addition to the sound deadener on just about any flat surface I can apply it to.

It makes a world of difference. When people ask what that means, I tap on the roof (not applied..Mini-sounding "tink, tink, tink" then on the quarter panel (applied- "thunk, thunk". The universal response is "Damn!"

I also found that the solid foam rear squab of my Integra interior soaks up more sound than I would have imagined over the wire frame and 1/4" foam of the stock./The boot really is a sound box.

i used quite a few brands of sound deadeners, from the cheap (peal&seal) to the expensive (dynamat xtreme) and i will admit second skin damplier pro is my preference. their product is engineered to out perform the competition and it shows. since i'm the 4th owner of my mini, it has various treatments of sound deadening. panels that were untreated were treated with second skin damplifier pro and there's a difference. eventually, i was remove the other brands and treat the entire mini with damplifier pro.

here's some pics of the damplifier pro:

for a good read, check out the sound deadener showdown. it's an honest non bias of the common sound deadeners:

as mentioned by tcob, do it right the first time!

I have used Fatmat and Dynamat extreme.  Fatmat is garbage compared to Dynamat it is 1/2 to 1/3 as thick(you need at least twice as much to get the same result).  Fatmat does not stick nearly as well as Dynamat.  When I first purchased Fatmat I was impressed unitil I started using Dynamat.  Heres my thought ...the mini is a small car you don't need very much , why not get the better stuff. Do it right the first time so you dont need to take the car apart a second time.  Just as in anything is the car audio world "ignorance is bliss" so if you don't know any better then sure it's the best stuff out there.  Not trying to offend anyone with this post.  Having said that I am putting a product called "Black hole" in my Mini ...it's a step above Dynamat.

I just installed Fatmat on my brother's 73 mini, 100 sq ft for 129.00 including shipping from eBay.  Works great, easy to apply, makes a difference. Installed it under the roof, and floorboard.  I recommended it

I have not done a mini, but I installed FatMAt in a Triumph TR6 interior, and I was impressed with the reduction of road noise, and heat from the firewall and around the transmission in that car. This year I am planning on redoing my interior and will do it again in my Mini. If you go to ebay and search Dynamat, a bunch of other products will also show up that are 1/2 the price of Dynamat. I bought a 50 sq. ft. roll that was around $80-90 with shipping ( 2 years ago) and I think that will do ya just fine in a Mini.

I use to help out (work as a hired hand at a radio shop) and we installed it all day every day in cars, (But non of the audio tech's had it in there car as the only cars they had it in was the ones sponsored. They all were on the same sheet when it came to it, "Dynamat was to expansive". So with that most used other brands, I am installing boommat into my mini. Now second you must know what it is for, it is NOT a sound proffer, or any thing close, I adds mass to your sheet metal making it harder for it to vibrate and radle thus making base sharper, and taking out annoying radles.

So you might hear a positive outcome from the installation but depending on what sounds you are trying to get rid of, you might still have them. My friend just did a Dynamat install into his mini, (and now he is wondering why he still has such loud engion and road noise coming in to his ride).

My suggestion would be to install something similar but not as top price, and then get a mid firewall to line your floor board with after the install, this would be more affective.

But this is just imo, what I have found working in the audio field for a few years as a helping hand doing most of the grunt work and watching what the PRO's were using, or more important what they were not using.

Did a search for Dynamat but it did not return any hits

Anyone got any feedback on it?  Was looking into it today at work and wanted to see if anyone was using it in a mini.  If you've installed it a couple questions....

How much did you need for your car and where did you apply it all to?

Did you notice any difference in noise after the install?

Any pictures of the install?

Thanks
