I have a radio in my Mini-don't use it much-I'd rather listen to my car. It sounds a lot better.

The old British chap who previously owned my Mini had indeed hooked up an AM radio to the rear defroster, and it worked quite well. They both worked. I'm not sure how it'd pull FM freqs though and assume it'd be poor. However, I never listen to AM so I removed the head unit and have so far chosen to remain audio-free.

wow ! Good eye Don...Can't get anything by you.(hi hi) The other antennas is a F9FT Tonna 2m Yagi with Tri-Reflector. It was quite long (longer than the car) but very hard to see in that scan of an old photo. I think the Halo did see some active service to be sure, and I still have it. You have to really squint to see the antennas on the roof in this particular shot, but I found them to be MORE than adequate, back in the early 1990's... If you are going to use an antenna like pologroud shows, don't stick it on the inside of the roof... Very bad reception.....duh...... don't ask why I know... Han

When I still had my '71 Mini, we hooked up the antenna and left it behind the rokee dash. It worked well for me. ---------------------------------------------- My Higher Authority is the German Purity Law of 1516 .

In my Corvair (where I didn't want to drill a new fender hole in my new fender) I used a glass mount antenna. Cable runs through the car up to a 2" black plastic square on the rear window. Another matching black plastic square sticks on the outside of the glass at the same spot and a cellular-like antenna screws to this. With the antenna removed, you hardly even notice the little black plastic square and the reception is decent. Bill

That should in theory work, although I would not give up my defroster function. My '95 Toyota Avalon has an AM band antenna built into the rear window alongside the defroster element. When I switched the factory radio, I used that antenna to connect to my external TV tuner box - provides perefect reception when stationary. Have an electronic antenna which is perfectly adequate for local reception. Have no experience with distant stations.

As another alternative (albeit not a free one), you should be able to (magnetically) situate a satellite radio antenna on the dash or under the rear window and pick up signal. In my daily driver (Honda Civic), I have an antenna for Sirius sitting on the dash inside the car and it picks up signal with no problem. Most of these antennas are fairly small, flat, and unobtrusive. They also typically have enough wire to wrap around the Mini a few times!

Get a mobile TV diversity antenna. $20 for the el cheapo ones on E-bay. you could mount it lengthwise under the lower dash rail or put it in the back window, should come with a long enough antenna cable to allow this. I agree with Big Al...I have used boosters etc. without favorable results. I will be using a roof aerial soon. I know that not to many people like radios in Mini's but when you drive them on vast expanses of road I would rather not hear the drumming of my RC40 for long distant travel (I own a Tinny Wagon). It takes days to loose the drumming sound in your head after 3000 miles!
