Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party
by Jerry (Siddhartha) Bradbury
What can transform a peaceful sylvan lawn in Gold Country into a carnival overnight? The annual Mini Mania Open House and Lawn Party of course! Those who were there got to see first hand all the eye candy, but for those who were not, the Mini's ranged from an electric Moke to a VTEC powered Classic, to Randy Steven's tricked out CVT to Robert Holt’s Purple Haze convertible to three full on Mini race cars: my sprint car, Jacques Andres' enduro car and Eric and Colin Herricks's rally car, and many in between.

This will be my first official race with the US Touring Car Championship and I look forward to hitting the grid with more horsepower and quicker lap times.

MINI Clubman Review

Published: 21st April 2008
The new MINI was launched in 2001, to much acclaim. Although bigger than the original Mini, what it lacked in rear legroom, it made up for in unusual styling and a vast array of personalisation elements, much loved by a local estate agent.

The MINI Clubman has the same raft of options but its main benefit is the extra length, which should make rear passengers happier.

Hello Doug - thanks for the reply . The car is a 1275 1967 Mk1 S  with std twin tanks and bayonet sendor in the tank . I have installed a bespoke 'Autosparks harness to connect a 'none mini' standard 52mm smiths electical Fuel gauge . The smiths gauge works but with only a gallon in the tanks the gauge reads 50% full . I have just purchase a second sendor ( delivery tomorrw) so that I can bypass the sendor in the tanks and then maybe put some in lline resistors in the circuit to simulate full and empty . Note I'm not using the stnadrd smiths fule gauage in the base of the mini speedo . Thanks in advance regards bruce - Hope the pics are attached

Years ago I found that 1/4 of a tank on the gauge was in fact empty (as I was sitting at the side of the road out of gas).  Bending the wire on the sending unit (wire that connects to the float in the tank) allowed me to adjust the reading to read empty when it was in fact empty.  My problem was the float was not going to the empty position on the sender and had hit bottom at 1/4.

You'll have to provide more information.

The gauge type changed in late 1964.  Mk1s before that time used a magnetic type gauge and sender.  From late 1964 on, the gauge system included the voltage stabilizer and the gauges were based on bimetallic strips.  The components of the two gauge systems are not interchangeable.

The Cooper-S sender was not different from that used on standard Minis.  The early senders bolt onto the LH tank.  They had a resistance range of 0 Ohms = empty to 90 Ohms = full.  The later senders mount with a bayonet ring and they operate between 240 Ohms = empty to 30 Ohms = full.

The 90-0 Ohm sender was not unique to Minis.  Various other cars (particularly General Motors) used similar senders so you may find a gauge that will work with that (assuming your car is early).  A LOT of late model instruments will work with the 240-30 Ohm sender but the response will not likely be linear (i.e. Half a tank displayed on the gauge won't likely be half a tank).

The important thing to note is that the early and later senders not only have very different resistance ranges... the resistance changes in different directions.  That's why components of the two gauge systems cannot be interchanged.

Post more information on what you're trying to accomplish and what you have and we'll see what we can do to help.

Hi - new to this site ( MCR member) Does naybody know how to calibrate the sendor on the twin Cooper s tanks to the smiths after market seperate Fuel gauge (52 mm diameter ) . Its suggested I use a seperate sendor with a box of resistors or maybe a variable resistor to simulate full and empty . Any advice . Regards Bruce
