There was a stores sales flyer circulating around the shop yesterday (FutureShop's I think?)

and we all had a good laugh, as a number of the computer ads said:

 "Free Downgrade to WindowsXP"

First time I've seen that before !  I suspect mfr's are hurting some, cuz a number of folks have stopped buying new computers once they heard of VISTAS problems....and most of them all come with VISTA loaded on them.  Personally, I like my Windows XP Pro. Very few problems compared to anything I've used in the past.

To the best of my knowledge there is no fix.  I think the only "fix" possible will be if Heritage makes available a downloadable, stand-alone program that will run under Vista and access the files on the various CDs.  I purchased my used IBM laptop months ago partially to be able to read my Heritage CDs... partially because I had a need for a portable PC.  I'm happy with my PC decision and I still don't like Vista.

Does anyone have a fix or workaround for this problem yet? I tried the Hexalock Vista Compatibility Utility (see below) but it doesn't make any difference. This problem will only get worse as the Vista OS population increases, unless BMH reissue the CD's.

I love this.  We pay for these products, but the seller considers us all to be theives so they maim the product and make it useless.  Who is robbing whom?

I have a new Panasonic laptop.  It is made to do work.  It came with XP.

But then again, I've got a good enough selection of mini workshop manuals from the four corners of the empire that I can find conflicting information on just about any aspect of these cars.

I forgot to take the CD to work where we have the current release candidate installed. I don't think it will make much difference. The silly Flash based menuing system is clunky even on XP.

Acrobat provides all the funtionality it provides with menus and permissions. I don't understand why companies choose cute over function. The permissions are tied to the Flash Jester Jugglor application used to create the interface. The same error is given when opening on a Mac.

Did anyone ever figure out if service pack 1 cured this problem?

I found a download on hexalocks (the guys that put the security on the disc) website that is a fix for vista, I just cant figure out how to install it or make it work.

A friend told me to look online for a patch or something that might fix the problem but I dont know enough about computers to even know where to look or how to use it if I found one.

Someone on this forum must know a guy who knows a guy who could hack into NORAD if he wanted to that can help us solve this problem.

If people can burn copywrited movies why cant we look at a mini manual with vista?

Good luck John.  I also have my old C drive in a USB enclosure.  I need to make backups of all my new files to it soon.

I had no luck when trying the PDF copy steps you're describing.  Let me know if you are successful.

The new address book can import output files from Outlook if you have backup files.  However, the new address book is different and it doesn't even sort the entries the same way Outlook did.  Once you copy your old Outlook entries you'll have to manually edit and sort the information in Vista.

Not all change is good.

I'm now in the same boat.  Just picked up my new pc with Vista Ultimate and can't do a thing with it because of all the visual clutter.  )What"s with the new address book)  Heck, even the keyboard isn't compatible anymore.  Thankfully I"ve still got my old 'C' drive, so I"m going to try to stick it in an external drive casing and maybe I'll be able to run the old Windows98 from it.  If not, I'll try to extract the .pdf files onto the 'C' drive and then pull them into Vista from a folder on the old 'C' as non-protected files.

The only thing my new 'puter has that the other didn't is support from Microsoft and Symantec.  Oh, and it\s a bit faster and bigger too.  But the old one was definately better.  Argh.

Cheese, the problem is exactly as wannamini described.

The Heritage CD has its own executable file to open the PDFs and that program won't run under Vista.  The logical thing to try when that fails is to browse the CD manually and randomly open the PDFs.  When you try... Vista will report an error message about file protections.  Take the same CD to a machine running XP or Win98 and you can open the files fine.  I figured... OK, I'll open the files one at a time on an XP machine and copy them one by one onto a USB drive and open them in Vista that way.  Nope, file protections again.  I went so far as to download a couple of freeware and shareware PDF readers to try.  Under Vista they could not open the copied files either.

What I would love to see Heritage produce is a stand alone program that I could load on my Vista machine that would access and open the files stored on the Heritage CD.  I'm not holding my breath.

Yep, I've got a 5 year old Dell laptop with XP and even though it's an antique, I'll not get rid of it until there's a "better" version of Vista out there that at least works as well as Win98.   dan

PS. in fact I'll probably never get rid of it. I'll replace the win98 desktop in the garage with it instead. Probably easier to keep clean too.

Yes, I have opened other PDF files and not had a problem.  The message is something along the lines of " HCPS loader has stopped working, windows will now close the program and notify you when a solution is available"

Doug.

Can you open ANY pdf's?  What is the exact error message?  Cut and paste it if you don't mind.

Live dangerously:

This is not the final version, so read the gotchas and then decide if you wish to do this. I am not sure this will fix this type of problem as I believe it is related to the control settings in Acrobat more than the OS.
