BMW has shown why its new MINI will be the safest car in its class ever when it goes on sale in two months' time. In an Auto Express exclusive, we've peeled back the skin of the eagerly awaited model with this 'cut-away' image to expose why the car will set new standards in the supermini sector. Packed with technology you'd only ex-pect to find in executive and luxury models, the MINI has nearly three times the torsional stiffness of its rivals, thanks to BMW's use of the latest'virtual reality' crash test simulations.
A spokesman told us: "The levels of active and passive safety, including the MINI's superb rigidity, offer large-car safety standards in a supermini. This is a first in the class, and we believe it will appeal to customers as much as the model's handling and styling."
Standard safety kit on both MINI One and Cooper includes four airbags. The driver and passenger get the latest 'smart' airbags, with the severity of the impact determining the extent of deployment. Sidebags have been built into the seat back, and drivers wanting extra peace of mind have the option of an Advanced Head Protection System. This device shields up to four occupants from head injuries, and the MINI is the only car in the class to offer it.
While such excellent levels of safety point to a four-star performance in its forthcoming Euro NCAP crash test, the MINI isn't found wanting in terms of technology, either. The German giant has equipped both models with power-steering, ABS, Cornering Brake Control and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution as standard. Optional driver aids, mean-while, include Active Skid Control and Dynamic Stability Control. All the new car's tyres feature innovative run-flat technology, and there's even an indicator to show when pressure is low. This article is copyright and courtesy of AutoExpress.
