| With a rise of 4.2%, automobile sales in the BMW Group showed a clear positive development in February. In total, 77,790 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce cars were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 74,660). Up to and including February, the corresponding figure, at 152,155 units, is slightly below last year's level (154,620/-1.6%). In the Munich plant, production had to be interrupted from Christmas 2003 to the end of January 2004 due to refurbishment and modernisation measures. Largely as a result of this, sales in January had declined.
As the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Dr. Helmut Panke, confirmed a few days ago at the Geneva Motor Show, the company is assuming that all brands will be setting new records for the year as a whole.
In February, 64,910 BMW automobiles were delivered to customers. This is an increase of 3.9% (prev.yr.: 62,470). For the period up to the end of February, sales reached 124,040 units, which was slightly below last year's level (127,320/ -2.6%). The new models BMW X3 and the BMW 6 Series launched on the market in January received an outstanding response from customers. 5,400 BMW X3 models have already been delivered to customers since the market launch on 10 January, and the figure for the BMW 6 Series luxury coupé is 1,220 units. Additional growth impulses for the BMW brand will be provided over the course of the year by the launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring, the BMW 6 Series Cabrio and, from the autumn, the new BMW 1 Series.
In February, sales of the MINI once again outstripped the high levels of last year by 5.4%. 12,840 MINI One, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S left the dealerships worldwide (prev.yr.: 12,180). Up to and including February, 28,025 MINI were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 27,290/ +2.7%). The MINI Cabrio, which will be available from July, is currently making its world début at the Geneva Motor Show, where it has been given an extremely positive reception. In the medium term, the company is expecting around a fifth of MINI sold to be convertibles. 40 Rolls-Royce automobiles were delivered in February. For the year up to and including February, this means that 90 cars have been handed over to customers.
A market environment that continues to be difficult and the model changeover for the highest selling model - from the R 1150 GS to the new R 1200 GS - affected motorcycle sales in the first two months as expected. In February, deliveries, at 4,125 units, were still 34.1% lower than last year's level (6,260). For the year up to and including February, 7,220 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 10.340/-30.2%). With the market launch of the R 1200 GS later this month, the company is expecting to reverse developments due to model cycles and thus to continue the growth in sales in the motorcycle segment. |
