BMW-PSA 1.6-litre Turbo (MINI Cooper S, Peugeot 207)

BMW’s strength in the International Engine of the Year Awards continues with this gem. The Cooper S unit replaces the previous supercharged design, itself a 2003 International Engine of the Year Award winner, with a lighter, powerful, and more economical turbocharged engine.

The all-new four-cylinder gasoline unit, developed in partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën, is constructed from light alloy and features a twin-scroll turbocharger, gasoline direct injection, twin overhead camshafts, roller-type drag arms optimised for minimum friction, and hydraulic valve play compensation elements. The outlet valves are filled with sodium to aid cooling, while the intake camshaft comes with infinite phase adjustment, setting the engine’s valve timing to the driver’s power and performance requirements.

All this technology delivers peak output of 175bhp at 5,500rpm, and a specific output of 109.5bhp/litre. The maximum torque is 240Nm, maintained consistently throughout the speed range from 1,600 to 5,000rpm. Under acceleration, torque is increased to 260Nm by an overboost function, which enhances charge pressure, working exclusively on engine torque. Average fuel consumption of 6.9L/100km (40.9mpg) rounds off the Award-winning package.
