Yes, the border watches the river very closely now, They actually follow people by air and car, and will stop them just before their return border crossing. Very dramatic stuff, lot's of big guy's in vests, not sure what they were smuggling, but could not have been worth it. Smart to treat the border area as a police state, there are only their rules. Now that the "Border" extends 100 miles from any border line, My home is in that area.

ontim. I know a story . once  upon a time  .. where someone crossed the border from canada into maine in 1979 with a morgan and mini  on a logging road and did NOT do formal entry..  at midnight one dark stormy  night.. and a YEAR later CBP US CUSTOMS showed up their house in miami and with GUNS drawn.. SEIZED both the morgan and the mini.. both cars  went back to ENGLAND.   Threats were made by CBP for smuggling ect.. as CBP had photos of the cars crossing the border..?? later bc

To B_artman's point A standard letter from Detroit to Windsor, a distance of less than half a mile, is under a buck, and takes 2 weeks, as it has to go through Toronto, then back. Anything faster or bigger starts at $70.00 minimum from all carriers. Tempting to just shoot it across the river with a crossbow. hmmm carrier pigeon's!, I suppose they would just employ border patrol hawks.

They may have been tracking the truck and noted where it stopped.  I cannot imagine it is financially viable to have any tracking device in the box itself.

Off the point because I need to get going. Did you guys know that flat rate USPS boxes are tracked by GPS  I had a problem with something and they actually went on their computer and showed how many houses were on my street and determine that that box was sent to My Neighbor Next Door .

I wouldn't BS on a shipping form either.....if it's worth $300, insure it for that and pay the little extra.
UPS is the absolute worst for shipping.  If I order something from the States, I wont buy unless they ship ISPS.
Even USPS is ridiculous at times...especially their "priority post" in their own box....stupid prices.

I'll order from over seas before the US unfortunately......quicker and cheaper!  Especially new parts

A good example of this, is if l sell a mini in Canada to a U S resident for say $10k US and he asks me to show a sale price of say $3k he is in effect saving on export duty to the tune of $$210.00. Eg: Duty $10k. =3%. =$300.00 Duty $ 3k. =3%. =$. 90.00

Alledged saving by misrepresentation to the buyer $210.00

Mind you using $3k as the sale figure will also save him $400.00 - $500.00 in his State sales tax which of course is no concern of mine

So if someone wants me to put my name on the line with either Canadian Customs or U S Customs for any amount of savings best to find another dealer

I have been to the "Dance" a couple of times before and believe me, it ain't funny As Billy Bob said they have a meridid number of ways to find the correct value,so play it straight and get home safely

My general observation as a regular online shopper is that shipping anything from the US is absurd. For example: I buy vinyl records and it can cost 15-20 USD to ship a 7" single from the US to Canada (doesnt matter if from California or Michigan). Meanwhile I have paid half or even a third of that when buying from Spain, Germany or even Japan. Mini parts? Same problem: inflated part prices + ludicrous courier/shipping. Oh and just for fun it takes longer to get the parts from the US.. Put all that together and I tend to buy more from non-US sellers.

cooper tune... I NEVER give FAKE invoice on parts..  CBP ( US  CUSTOMS) now can require as EEI..  electronic  bank wire info on anything incoming or going for export..  and you MUST show what you or your customer PAID for the item.. parts or even CARS..  later bc

We all have parts, need parts and get parts shipped. Shipping materials can be purchased many places and the Post Office gives some boxes away. The flat rate boxes can be a bargain but are not always depending on size and weight of the item. Seems commercial to commercial location is sometimes cheaper than to a home.
Dealing with customs leaves questions for me. I pretty much know what's expected coming in. It is shipping to other countries and how best to handle the questions of value, is it a gift and insurance.

I have had some of the UK guys unhappy with me over values and insurance. How do you insure something for $500. then claim $10 for customs? Sometimes claiming over 25 years old helps. I have been able to post to one side of boarder and have it walked across and repost from there. Truck is not cheap and unloading can be a problem without a fork lift. Just wondering what thoughts you have. Steve (CTR)
