If DMV records show as such, would that make it, technically, legal to drive (transfer)?

Very lucky to get it registered in California.

Only two owners from DMV records.

The second owner (current seller) said that the original owner was aware of the re-vin when the car was imported.

It is a known fact that most stolen Mini's do not end up here in the States, just BS as Bill stated. Since the Chunnel and before it was built it was and is far easier and cheaper plus quicker to move stolen goods not just Mini's (there is way more profit in other cars and things believe me) over to Europe.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

The statute of limitations is FIVE years.. on import of cars and trucks.  this includes Re Vin.  This came out in Federal court in Wilimington NC. when the ADA Steve West was going after Dr Aaron Richardt over SEIZING 78 land rover defenders that he has imported..  Dr Aaron customers ALL got their land rovers back. thanks to the Defender of the Defenders..  I would ask current owner who imported this mini and who sold it to him.. later bc  ps.. all this BS about every re vin being STOLEN is just an old wife tale..

It would help to locate one in your area if your profile was filled out.

If anyone has a lead, throw it at me.

Thanks again.

That's just too funny! Kaitlyn Jenner, the ultimate Re-VIN! ??

But seriously folks, the car in question is definitely illegal and especially illegal in California. Now, depending on what it really is, it may be legal in some states if registered under it's original numbers. The only problem at that point is if it was stolen and re-VINed. At that point it's gone and you're out of the money invested. Speaking of which, now that you've published photos showing the California plates and it's new VIN, it's gonna be real easy for the Chippies to find and crush. You might want to tell the owner to get it out of the great state of California before it becomes scrap metal...seriously, they can and will crush it. Thanks to your photos and numbers they can find it by computer.

This is akin to getting married to the girl of your dreams, wedding night, everything is coming along fine and then on closer inspection you find out when it's too late, you married a revin or trans gender as they call it now

Late 80s or early 90s reVIN that has been monkeyed about with.

As it's on California plates, I'd suggest walking away - the fact that it is registered and titled doesn't remove the fact that it is a totally and utterly illegal car in a State known to seize and crush cars they don't like.

No, I have not made the purchase yet.
Thanks for all the great information.

Just to add, the car is currently registered.
Would that still make it illegal?

I will reconsider my offer.

Thanks again.

91 or 92ish car 1275 carbed with a 1996 Equinox interior.

This car's origins are questionable.
Was it stolen?
Definitely Illegal...
If you already bought it...that's another kettle of fish.

If you study the pictures of a Mark 2 Mini, it would have sliding windows and 10' wheels..
The Mini in these pictures has a lay down brake master post 1984.
If there are no numbers on the trunk latch take a door panel off and read the door latch panel.

You will need to determine the exact year to find the correct replacement parts.

Walk away.  It is a re-vin.  There are a lot of good cars out there.  You may want to find a local club and get hands on education about Mini's.  Michael

Its a VIN swap! Maybe because it's too late of a car to import or maybe being right hand drive it was stolen in the UK and vin swopped to hide it's true identity? Whatever the case it's ILLEGAL............................

Mini's are like buses they come along in a bunch

Thanks for the input.
In your opinion, does that necessarily affect the value of the car?

It's currently registered as a 68.

The condition is there, just not sure whether or not an older 68 is more valuable than an ~84.

Thanks.

Not a 1968. It's a later than 1984. check the trunk lid for a date on the latch mechanism... Deb

Hallo!
I'm new but already checked some articles to get start identifying a 1968 Austin Mini Cooper I'm about to purchase.
It's right hand drive, 4-speed. The the cluster in the dash is behind the steering wheel, not in the middle compared to the ones I saw online. The cluster is also rectangular.

VIN: A-A2SBS-xxxxxxxx makes it an 1968 MK II (the tag is riveted on the chassis behind the passenger headlight)
What I'm not sure of is what the second "S" on the A2SBS stand for. There is also no number right after the "2S", instead, it's a "B" compared to the example on the article.

Commission Number: 2/cx cxxxxxx L
The "L" is on the very far right of the tag riveted on the chassis by the alternator, located near the radiator.

Also, anything else I need to look at to identify the originality?

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks
