I have never cut a hole for a right hand tank. Our 85 1000E came with the hole cut but no tank. I bought the rights to a tank Pete Mustang had bought from a guy in OZ. The tank was still in OZ and the seller stopped answering e mails. When I was able to make contact the guy had been in hospital for a couple of weeks following a car wreck. He passed it off to a guy shipping a car to the west coast. In time the tank showed up here in Va. I installed that one after having both tanks coated outside with Rhino Liner. Installing with the larger left side tank I would fill both and rear ride height, head lamps and performance all suffered and I'd run out of gas all the time due to going so long between fill ups. I don't fill up any more and I carry a 1 gallon gas can in the trunk. Even when I make long distance runs the tank is larger than my bladder.

I have always wanted a MK 1 with right tank only. I picked up a second right tank already powder coated outside. The plan was to ship to Fuel Safe and have a cell fitted within the tank. Paying $300/$400 for a tank then spend another $750 to make it a fuel cell did not appeal to me. If I build the kids an autocross car it will have a right tank only. Looking forward to seeing how tank location will help corner weight as I like LHD cars. Steve (CTR)

PS Does anyone have a good small left hand tank late style sender for sale along east coast?

Stick one of these over the hole.

It's been 30 odd years since I've had an S with twin tanks... However this topic has recently been a topic with some discussion on the Ozmini site.  Consensus seems to be that the right hand tank opening is level with the left one but 6mm closer to the cars centreline.

Two pertinent comments noted that (a) this measurement is one way of separating a genuine S from a  reshell and (b) the mirror image methods works but the tank neck will stick out from the body a little further than it should...

Of course, Oz Ss may be different from the UK versions (as they are in many area) .. but in this regard, I don't think so.

Cheers, Ian

They are still available new, if that is what you want. For instance, use the SEARCH here and look for "tank". Both items will show up.

To make sure the one i did was in the correct spot i pulled the left tank loose and removed the grommet so i could trace around the hole onto the template from the inside and be sure it was as close as possible. I then cut out the hole and installed the template on the other side and traced around the hole onto the metal then removed the template and measured both sides to make sure i had it exact. It worked out well with no extra "aligning" work to do after the hole was cut.

Sort of. Factory bodies were usually close enough and I've never seen an OEM, right side tank that was far enough off to cause lots of trouble. However, that doesn't mean everything will fit every time. If the car has been hit and repaired, you may have slight differences. And aftermarket tanks (not OEM) are notorious for being different. What most were saying, I believe, is use the left side to right side flip, but do it with caution -- just in case.

  1. Ok this is what I understand:
  2. Make a pilot hole from the template from the left tank and custom work the hole in the right side. No two Mini's were built the exact same (and no two OEM tanks were the same)  cut and paste as needed, correct?

I also have successfully made a lefthand template and reversed it to the right side with no alignment issues. That being said, Minis were a little bit 'hand made' and not to the highest standards, so there are usually different tolerances in lots of panel fitments. Randy

I've fitted two RH tanks and located the right hand hole by using a paper template of the left tank filler neck hole, with the tank removed.  Make a couple of templates, I used the rain gutter, the body seam and belt line as references.  I was surprised to see how the dimensions differed, regardless of how careful I was.  You know the old saying, 'measure twice, cut once'.  Mask off the site to preserve the paint, and cut the hole using a hole saw smaller than than the diameter of the filler neck hole and gradually enlarge the hole to fit using a half round file.  Might be a good idea to have the lower tank bracket, P/N 21A1329, installed to help locate the tank while enlarging the hole. Don't forget to prime the bare metal.  Good luck.

I guess it would depend on whether it was an oem one or replica of one or one of those home made jobs.
I have fitted one of the Mini Sport ones and just used the template method (and a lot of measuring) after i drilled a center hole and it fitted fine with no issues.

I hate to argue with Ian, but I've seen lots of references, including from Wood & Picket, that say to transfer the measurements from the left filler neck hole. That's how I did mine. Granted, it's an Elf, not a Mini, but it worked fine.

If Ian is correct, which he usually is, it's got to at least be very be close.

Over the years I've installed RH tanks in two cars by creating a paper template using the LH tank hole as a guide, just as you have described. It worked fine both times. If there is a slight dimensional difference between the two sides, we've got to be splitting hairs.

I bought a right gas tank a couple of years ago, and I'm just getting around to installing it. Is the hole for the filler neck symmetrical to the left side tank? Other words, can I make a paper template of the left side hole, flip it and transfer it to the right side?
