As Georgia only requires a Bill of Sale on 10 year (?) and older cars are there any differences in procedure compared to getting a regular title which as i have been told can be done on older cars. Just asking.

On another note i find it amazing (well not really) that our US customs will accept the NON 17 digit 99X vins stamped into the boot floor by hand in Japan and sometimes sitting next to the original SAXX vin plate over the factory issued one with no problem just because the paperwork matches. Then you import a legit UK stamped vin numbered car with 17 digits just like the rest of the world since 1980 and with matching paperwork and they put it on manifest hold which from my experience sometimes takes over a month to clear with storage charges.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

I can only relay my experience this month, so YMMV.  I should have mentioned all my cars are RORO, so no container demurrage charges. So far no additional port storage charges and my broker says those will be very, very low.  No VACIS exam involved, just an officer opening the car doors / hood / trunk & looking, had several other cars checked this way with no extra charges.  Yes, CBP does stamp documents by hand for Georgia registration, probably a Georgia DMV specific requirement?  I was told by CBP (since I live in Georgia) to get each car's docs stamped.  And for pick up I had a contract flat bed driver with a TWIC card go into the port to pick up the car- he dropped me off at the CBP office then swung by after loading to pick me up.

I'm new to the forum but figured I could offer some tips as I -just- imported a JDM Mayfair into Georgia- Port of Savannah.  Actually have a few coming in & 2 'stuck' in customs atm. I'm not a dealer just a collector / enthusiast.  Experience so far: 99x (Japanese re-VIN of SAXXL2) models fly through customs, no problem.  My May '92 & June '92 SAXXN Minis are being 'detained' until DOT can verify build dates.  I've talked to the DOT guy (in DC), he's nice enough but won't consider the JDM Export Certificate date until he confirms no production info is available.  Anyway, I'm learning a lot! I can give you a short answer on registering an JDM Mini here in GA: After CBP inspects the car & releases it, and you pay all your port fees you can take the car over to the CBP office and have an officer hand stamp your EPA, HS & Customs forms.  DMV will require those stamped/signed forms. Having said this, I just starting the process & will report any hiccups.

It is not just a/c Bill the lack of rust issues is a big plus with a Jap spec Mini.

dsgbhandsomerob  if you make your email in your profile visible to other registered users, you may get more direct responses outside of a public forum.

Not sure how the forum is set up now, but it used to be if you click on my username you can then send me an email. Non-members cannot do that.

CA

I am in Canada, and while I am not too familiar with the import rules for the US, I have been on this site long enough to know what isn't allowed. < 25 years old for most of the US, Don't even try to bring one to California...

I have had some fun over the past few year bringing the occasional car from Japan, enjoying it for a while then selling it on. I have also tracked down some cars in japan and imported them for friends and family. I have brought in MGFs, BMW Z3s , Porsches, and even tracked down a Ferrari for a friend a couple years ago. My role is typically to find the car, arrange the paperwork, retrieve it from the docks, and get it compliant for Canadian regs. DOT tires, daytime running lights, side marker lights etc.

Most recently, I bought a couple treats for myself, a Suzuki Cappucino, and a Lotus Elan. i shop for Minis all the time, but haven't yet found the "perfect" one for me. The 25 year old ones tend to go for more money than the newer ones, likely because they are legal now in most States.

Not to contadict Bill, but I do see the occasional LHD one for sale, but they are rare and fetch a premium. with the prices of 60's and 70's Minis on the rise, the JDM cars have followed suit in the past few years, it used to be you could get a pretty nice car for $5000, but think about doubling that now.

If you are interested, I could probably help you get one onto North American shores.

Can't help if you don't say TO WHERE you want to import a Mini. This is an international forum! If to the USA, you will have to indicate which state too.
