Thank you for the input. Our 2016 is a Gen 3, not 1. We intended to upgrade the shifter, so this is not masking the issue but making it more enjoyable to drive. That being said, the reverse issue may still persist if this is a cable issue as the dealer has said.

We would like to know if anyone else has has any issues with reverse. It is just the lightest touch to get into reverse. Thanks
This is not something that we have experienced.  I would recommend that you try driving a different but similar model at the dealership to see if it exhibits the same symptoms - I would guess it will not.

I will guess the short shift will not make much difference.  My recommendation is to correct the issue causing the problem - masking the symptom with another modification is not what we would recommend.  The issue can be a linkage issue, or perhaps an internal issue with the transmission....  I would recommend that you continue to work with the dealer to correct this under warranty.

The regular contributors to this Forum are almost exclusively "classic" mini owners and enthusiasts. You'll have better response on your question by posting on the forum at North American Motoring.

That being said, I've owned a BMW MINI and am still involved with a local club, and have not heard of the transmission problem you mention. My MINI, a 2010 gen2 (yours is a gen1), was a money pit, but the transmission was solid when I traded it.

Good luck!
