So I did not get a response from Deves - the maker of the piston rings which gave me so much trouble so I bought another set from made by Grant and what a difference. No fuss, all of the rings installed without drama and in half the time. The instructions were clear and detailed compared to the set from Deves which were not even for the rings I bought.

If you need to buy piston rings for your mini, I thoroughly recommend the Grant set. As an aside, they are also a bit less expensive

I'm sorry, surely it must be bad rings. I have been rebuilding LBCs for 52 years. Don't think I have broken three rings in the whole time, Steve (CTR)

Steve - As a response, that was as much use as a chocolate teapot. For the record, I have been restoring British cars and their mechanicals for over 30 years. I am looking for feedback on piston ring quality and recommendations. I am still awaiting an answer from the manufacturer but if I don't get it in the next couple of days will go ahead and order a set from somewhere else.

If you are breaking rings you don't know what you are doing. A piston ring will seal once and never again. That's what I think. Steve (CTR)

I bought a 5 ring piston ring set made by a big US company. One of the 5 rings is "stepped" and most are cast iron alloy rather than steel or chromed steel. To cut a long story short, the stepped ring was a real problem and despite using a ring expander as well as manual manipulation, three of them shattered during installation.

I contacted the manufacturer and am waiting on a response but find myself wondering if there is a recommended maker for these rings. I could replace the stepped ring (third from the top) on all four pistons with normal flat rings from the stock of those I removed as they are all well within spec, but will wait on opinion from this august body !

I replaced the rings as a matter of course after honing the bores but the pistons were very clean indicating little or no blow by
