Brakes spongy after changing rotors and pads?

1) you should bleed them. It's not hard to do with a partner.
2) have you bedded them in yet using the manufacturers procedures?

I've changed brakes on many cars before and never had this problem. Today, I changed the front rotors and pads on my R56 as routine maintenance. When test driving, the brakes felt spongy and require more pressure and farther travel on the peddle for the same stopping power. I didn't do anything with the brake fluid. Why are they spongy like this and how can I fix it?
