I wondered about using valve springs myself - but its really hard to find information on spring specs used on the original flywheel. Mine works fine at the moment most of the time but I can feel it slipping more than it should - The hydraulics are working fine and on the flat it doesnt slip but hit a steep slope and I can almost come to a standstill.
I will give machining the hub a bash and try with a diaphragm - I have a spare off my 1275 - and if I mess up I'll have to get a new flywheel for it.

Back in the day JC Whitney sold a HD double spring kit for the early flywheels. I wonder if with a progressive size chart for valve springs you could come up with something that would work? Machining the sq. shoulder to a rounded edge worked back then and would now. The 850s,  997s and 1100 all used coil spring clutches. Steve (CTR)

Barri: The diaphragm type had a ring around the center piece of the flywheel, the spring type didn't so add the ring to it.  At least it was something done around 45 years ago - place in lathe and cut the ring.

How do you modify the spring type to fit a diaphragm  type clutch? I cant get a good enough look at the picture to see what has been done

Yes, the type that use the 6 springs that look like valve springs in the center hub, and the hub looks like the one in my video are obsolete, can't get the pressure plates, so usually have to change to the diaphragm spring style we're all used to.  You CAN bolt a later hub (from the 2-peice pre-Verto style flywheels into the outer flywheel and ring gear of one of the early ones, but it is usually the hub that gets damaged on the crank, so it's not as if good ones are common!

I've made pullers out of standard hubs, but they are not as cool as the old 850 hubs with the "lightening holes"!

Is it just 850? or will it fit 1275 as well? I've never realized there was a difference except the early early cars.............

Steve, as USPS states "if it fits it ships" a flywheel ( pre-verto ) fits, in fact three will fit into a large flat rate box as long as the weight stays under 70 lbs.  So for $18.65 it is a great deal.

Minimans is this what you are looking for? (see pictures).

Back when the USPS flat rate thing first started (before they got smart and started printing identifying marks both inside and outside the box), they had a flat rate box that would JUST hold a single mini flywheel but didn't have room to really pad / protect the teeth / keep if from tearing through. I mailed one that way once.

Not sure about now,though. They've changed sizes and added regional rate and so on. Some box sizes are only available through the mail. Free, but you have to get them mailed to you.

I wonder if one would fit a large flat rate box USPS. I realize my collection of verto flywheels is getting really deep. I will look at what I have in pre verto. Steve (CTR)
