Thanks! I'm lucky that my hood/whole car needs re painting anyways so i'm not too concerned with scratching it at the moment. I just want to get all the body mods done before I go to paint it.

I've drilled off the bonnet lip and ground down the spot welds (on a concours quality van) and with a steady hand a smidge of good fortune it is possible without damaging the bonnet beyond a bit of touch-up paint where the welds were.
The aftermarket moustaches can sometimes take a bit of 'adjustment' when fitting, and the Benelite replica I just fitted required an alternator belt change and some 'ad-hoc manipulation' to get it somewhee close. I'll post a pic when I get home.

I had a similar question some time ago and got excellent advise from some of the forum members. In the end, I decided not to do the conversion, though,

Yes a MK I grille/mustache and ends will fit once you have drilled out the spot welds holding on the upper bonnet lip support.

Thats my question, the ad makes no mention if it requires removal of the lip (as i plan on doing). So for the true look the best option is to get an mk1 grill and mustache/whiskers and remove the bonnet lip? Doing this will fit properly?

But you CAN loose the bonnet 'lip' for the upper surround, then install a true MK1 wavy grill with it's proper 'moustache' surround....

If I understand the question, the wavy grille for Mk II and later is designed to fit with the Mk II and later bonnet piece. That piece stays in place and the grille fits with it. Doesn't work that way with the Mk I grilles. Different size and shape.

Looking to do an MK1 wavy grill conversion on my 75 Mini. I see our host has the original grill and also a specific one designed for later cars. It was my understanding that the grill body recess is the same for all generations so I am wondering why the need for a specific conversion grill? I am also aware of having to drill out the spot welds on the hood (bonnet for you Brits) and want the most original look possible.
