codswallop = bullS*** , for those of you who don't live in the land of Oz . And they don't always fit as well as you would like , I know as both my cars have been converted , not by me , from sliding window doors to windups.

W%^&er...

Kit??????

Hmmm how about ..doors, 8 bolts and spanner? (or maybe you could even the existing bolts).

Get off your high horse and start with the reasonable advice...

Cheers, Ian

You could modify them fairly easily Ala Land Rover, cut the door tops off and make it a single unit with the sliding window frame and use two studs and wing nuts to bolt it back onto the main door.

Me too!  There is no chance that I will install my MK1 sliding window, not while I own the car!  It's a fair weather car anyway, and in California, that means hot most of the time! Our Australian friends had it figured out in the 60s....  too damn hot a continent for little ovens who's windows only slide open a few inches!!  Seems I remember seeing photos of some Lexan race style pop-out windows that fit perfectly in modified door pockets.  That sounds like a really good compromise for those times you simply must leave the car parked unattended!

Hmmm, codswallop?   Must be Australian for "Brilliant"!!

Yes Ian, we know about the Aussie doors having roll-up windows!  And I know that actual conversions have been done over the decades, some of them pretty nice!  But There is no "kit" available!  It falls into the "if you throw enough money at it" category!  Show me an unlimited pile of cash, and I'll show you how to install an Alison 250B turbine from a Bell Jet Ranger in place of that wimpy Hyabussa engine!

I maintain that most of the time, a "roll-up window conversion" is claimed by sellers of newer cars registered as older cars.  I had one fellow who so convinced himself he was about to buy a MK1 that he got rather belligerent about the beautiful roll-up window conversion.  I had to drag him (from my desk) phone in hand to the back of the car, make him stick his head in the boot, and look for the welded in MK1 tail lamp panels!

Codswallop, is that like getting slapped with a trout? Interested in the quick pop out Mk1 window idea, how's that done?

Absolute codswallop.....

Australian Mk I/II (Deluxe/ Cooper S) doors - with wind up windows - will bolt straight onto a UK style Mk I/II shell.  At worst you might have to swap the nylon buffer and its matching bracket... but that's a two minute job with a phillips head screwdriver..

The only thing you need to be carful about is that the later Aus cars (K/S and Clubmans) had a different door that looks very similar except for the flappy lift up exterior door handle.  To fit these to a Mk I/II shell you would need to fit the matching B pillar... not a simple process.

If you are at all concerned as to whether you have a MkI/II or later shell, just look at the top of the door opening.  The early cars will have a piece of vertical body panel about a fingers width between the top of the door and the roof gutter.  Mk III and later (with UK style wind up windows) cars have the door opening going pretty much all the way up to the roof gutter.

Cheers, Ian

There has been "roll up window conversion" for Mk1 and Mk2 sliding window doors used in Radford and Wood & Pickett modified cars of the 60's and 70's (I have one, seen many others).  Most commonly these were fitted with vent windows and electric winders, although I recently saw what is thought to be a Radford with fixed "vent" windows and crank winder.

Hi Justin... you found a very old thread!!  Before your comment, dormant for nearly 5 years!   Go to the "cars for sale" page and look for the "Calssified parts"... maybe put a Parts Wanted ad.....

I know just the door handle hardware for the Aussie doors will set you back many hundreds of dollars... if you can find any.  Check ebay-australia!

Do you still have a set of OZ doors for sale. If so I am very interested.

The pickups and vans retained the sliding window MKI style doors throughout their production (always were external hinged doors). The early Aussie doors were a direct fit.

I know the MK 111 doors are wider and taller than the MK 1's by about an inch each way but i have seen more than one pick up and van converted this way in the UK and they were not Clubman Estates (roll ups standard) converted into vans and pick ups. I guess it is like anything if you throw enough money at it you can accomplish it.

MkIII doors are too wide, so to put them in a MkI body would require B-post work as well as A-post work.

Are not Mk III doors too tall??? Oner thing that gives the later models away (as well as the lack of hinges) is that the doors and rear windows go right up to the roof line....

As long as teh Oz door has an external handle (as opposed to a lift up flap) it will fit any Mk I.

Cheers, Ian
